Trump Warns of Consequences Without Iran Agreement

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Monday again warned of dire outcomes if ongoing negotiations with Iran fail, saying that without an agreement, "probably bad things will happen," according to reports.

Speaking to journalists at the White House, Trump said US naval forces are moving toward the region while diplomatic contacts with Tehran continue. "We have ships heading to Iran right now, big ones, the biggest and the best, and we have talks going on with Iran. We'll see how it all works out," he said. Emphasizing that discussions are still underway, Trump added, "But right now, we're talking to them. We're talking to Iran, and if we could work something out, that'd be great. And if we can't, probably bad things will happen.”

The renewed warning comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions following a major escalation last year. In June 2025, Israel, with backing from Washington, carried out a nearly two-week offensive against Iran, striking military and nuclear facilities as well as civilian infrastructure, resulting in the deaths of senior military commanders and scientists. Iran retaliated by launching missile and drone attacks on Israeli military and intelligence targets, after which the United States conducted a series of strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

Diplomatic efforts have intensified in recent days, with several countries in the region, including Türkiye, stepping in to try to reduce tensions and prevent further escalation between Tehran and Washington.

According to reports citing sources familiar with the matter, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are expected to meet in Istanbul on Friday as part of renewed talks focused on Iran’s nuclear program. The same sources said preparations for the meeting are ongoing, though others cautioned that arrangements remain subject to change and have not yet been finalized.

The anticipated discussions follow Trump’s comments last week about a massive "armada" moving toward Iran, alongside renewed calls for Tehran to immediately engage in negotiations.

He later said Iran was “seriously talking” with the United States.

Trump has repeatedly warned of possible military action against Iran amid mounting tensions linked to internal unrest there, including anti-government protests that erupted in late December following a sharp currency collapse, rising inflation, and worsening economic conditions.
